A recent study is raising concerns about the short-term and long-term effects of sugar and high fructose corn syrup on the brain and how it functions.
In tests conducted on rats, researchers determined that the sugar and high fructose corn syrup ingested by the rats had “sabotaged the ability of synapses to change” and “disrupted the sugar-regulating protein insulin in the hippocampus.” In short, the sugar negatively affected the rats’ ability to learn and form memories.
So, what can parents do keep their child’s brain in top form? Moderation is the most important thing. Restricting things like sugary sodas will not only keep kids’ brains functioning correctly, it will also help keep them healthy in general.
We’ve also mentioned some apps in the past that help teach children about healthy eating behaviors.
